The Project

Following complaints about traffic congestion, road safety and littering, it is clear that the Buck Barn service station is in urgent need of redevelopment. The team behind the proposals has set the following objectives for the project:

  • Improve the layout of the services, to manage the high traffic volumes and the awkward access

  • Reduce the impact of the existing petrol station and drive thru on the public highway and improve highway safety

  • Improve the energy performance of the buildings

  • Extend the retail offering, which will help fund the improvements to the site

  • Improve the visitor experience by speeding up the service and improving the environment

  • Create and sustain additional local employment

  • Identify landscape and ecology enhancements

  • Tackle the existing littering issue across the site and local highways network

The proposals have been developed following detailed discussions with planning officers at Horsham District Council. We want to ensure they meet the standards required by the local authority and comply with national planning and highways policies.

The site has operated as a petrol station since the 70s. McDonald’s arrived in the early 2000s and there are a number of exciting opportunities to improve the restaurant on the site in a new building.

McDonald’s is fully behind the plans as part of its ‘Planet Positive’ strategy. It is committed to repeating the success of its Market Drayton operation – its first UK industry net zero emissions restaurant. Buck Barn would be a further step forward in McDonald's ‘best in class’ worldwide.
